It also depends what style of fittings you run. If you run the more hit and run type of fit, you can engage multiple tanks providing a) youre targeting one (normally the most vulnerable), b) the area of engagement, c) infantry av locations, and d) your own abilities with modules/turret control/aiming/reloading/overheat.
The above is a general rule of thumb I stick to when I tank. As an example, we're playing on Manus Peak and im following an Ion Cannon Maddy and Rail Sica, in a Neutron Blaster Maddy with a Fuel Injector. Now, on first glance, I can engage and quickly dispatch the Sica - but before I engage, I check to see whether they are likely to stop (how close are the tanks to the action), for infantry av (its Manus Peak, buildings and mountains are highly likely), and can I eliminate my target while potentially sustaining fire from a stronger opponent (the Ion Cannon Maddy or a BFG). If the risk is low engage, and then your own abilities should allow you to eliminate the weaker opponent, and escape before youre potentially overcome by sustained fire. Now pretend we have an Ion Cannon Maddy in the same scenario - would you engage the other Maddy when we can see a) it has the same turret on the same hull, so potentially a similar fitting, b) infantry av may have been alerted of youre location and may be engaging, and c) were you damaged in the prior engagement and have recovered fully/target being engaged by friendly av/other tank. Normally I try to avoid multiple engagements, id much rather let the heat cool off in that location and wait a minute before returning and engaging. Then once again it depends on youre own ability on whether you win the engagment or not.
Damn that was wordy.
Anyway, for AV? If you are hit by an unsighted Forge, head for the nearest cover you can, and try to swerve if possible to avoid being potentially being hit up the arse and take more damage. If being Forged but can see and hit the Forger , engage if you feel they can be eliminated fairly quickly (Blaster), retreat if not (Missile/Rail). For Swarms or PLC, sighted or not, the above applies - head for cover, or engage if you feel as if you wont be overwhelmed. REs are different. The moment you hear the sound of REs being placed, friendly or not, move. Even if its friendly, by the time you can work out whether its friendly or not, another Enemy RE couldve been placed, and if its on the sweetspot on your arse... oh dear. Find somewhere where you wont be traced and check for REs, shoot them off 1 by 1 allowing health to regen, before returning to battle.
Also, on my tanking or flying suits, I tend to fit Range Amps on, as it allows you to see things before they get near you (e.g. Infantry AV, Jihad Jeeps, Ramming Dropships), and might let you escape before its too late.
Hope that helps. Would comment on brick tanking with hardeners, but I dont do it, so dont know how, and I think this is your playstyle regardless Jarrel lol.
I will be the only player to Prototype every single god damn weapon before Dust dies. 2 to go.
